How to prepare for a family session.
First things first, have you decided on the type of session you want?
Couple and family sessions can be at home or outdoors.
I have photographed many lovely couples & families including Mommy and Me sessions, Grandparents and Babies, and Siblings.
I love home and outdoor sessions equally. It’s completely up to you and what suits your family situation the best.
Here is some more information and tips for both.
WHEREABOUTS?
Home Sessions
Great for the colder months and perfect for children who are more relaxed and calm in their home environment. A common worry is that your home isn’t ‘Pinterest’ worthy. Don’t be! The best tip is to decide on where you would like the photos and focus on decluttering that space, even if it’s just stashing some stuff from one room to another for the time being. On the day of, I can move any items out of shot anyhow.
The most commonly used rooms for home sessions are the bedrooms and living room, although if the light is great in your hallway or kitchen then some great shots can be captured there too. Just remember that if you would like some photos in your bedroom then be sure to have a bedspread that isn’t too distracting.
Outdoor Sessions
If you have chosen an outdoor session, and have a location that is meaningful to you in mind then that’s great! Just let me know via your pre-session questionnaire. Otherwise I can help you to decide on where to have your session as I know some great spots. It’s best to have your photos somewhere fairly quiet without a playground to avoid distractions and prevent you from feeling self-conscious about having your photos taken with people about.
NATURAL LIGHT
Home Sessions
I need as much light as possible, so open up those curtains and blinds wide but keep the lights off. Before settling on a time, decide on the room(s) you would like the session in and watch for when the light is best in those spaces.
Outdoor Sessions
It is best to avoid midday (11am - 2pm) as the light is at its brightest which isn’t the best for flattering photos. The absolute best time is Golden hour; approximately 1 1/2 hours before sunset or at sunrise. I do understand that this isn’t always a suitable time for young children.
WHAT TO WEAR?
Home Sessions
Think casual, comfy and loose fitting and remember to wear either plain, neutral socks or be bare foot. It’s best not to have multiple outfit changes as this can be stressful.
I can offer you some advice on what would look best in your photos depending on the vision you have.
Outdoor Sessions
Consider the weather, if it’s cooler then be sure that everyone will be warm enough with layers including hats and scarves if necessary.
Don’t forget your footwear! Attempt to wear shoes that are not noticeable and that are practical.
HANGRY + TIRED
It’s best to have the kiddies with a full tummy to avoid them getting hangry, and don’t forget to bring some non-messy snacks or incentives (Sweets!) along with you.
Choose a time that works well around any naps or bedtimes that you have.
